Updated this week

Keep your metafields synced across multiple stores. Need a quick way to clone definitions and values for products / variants?

This add-on helps you eliminate the repetitive task of updating metafields one by one.

Overview

Metafields sync is an add-on for Shopify destination stores, which allows you to:

  • Sync or/ copy metafield definitions for products and variants from the source store to a destination store.

  • Once a metafield definition has been synced. Syncio will auto sync matching metafield values to products and variants from that source store.

There are two versions:

  1. The free trial version is available for all destination stores, and allows the syncing of:

    • 3 product definitions.

    • 3 variant metafield definitions.

    • Unlimited value syncing for any synced definition.

  2. The pro version, is an optional upgrade which allows for a higher number of definitions to be synced.

    • 50 product definitions.

    • 50 variant definitions

    • Unlimited value syncing for any synced definition.

Migrating from legacy metafield sync (pre-August 2025 metafield sync)

Note: this section only applies to Syncio accounts that have been using metafields prior to August 2025

Metafields sync has been revamped from the ground up to provide a higher degree of flexibility and control.

🌟 To allow for these new features, metafields that were synced before August 2025 will:

  • Stop syncing new values from August 11

  • Old metafield definitions and values synced before this date will not be deleted or removed.

  • This is to allow your stores to migrate legacy/ old metafields to the new version whenever you are ready.

Here are some quick links:

What are the differences between legacy metafield sync and the current version?

Part 1: How to migrate your existing metafields to the new versions

Case 1: I have existing matching source and destination metafield definitions, and the metafields are both standard Shopify metafields.

When you click the "sync" button in the new Metafields add-on. Syncio will do the following:

  1. Scan your destination store for a metafield definition on with matching namespace and key. If a match is found as below:

Syncio will simply connect your both metafields.

  2. The "not synced" will change to a green "synced" status if successful.

  3. Afterwards, Syncio will auto sync values based on the conditions here.

Case 2: I have existing matching source and destination metafield definitions, but the destination metafield is a legacy Syncio metafield.

For this case, we recommend, syncing the new version of the metafield you need to migrate first. The result is to create a duplicate of the target metafield that will replace the legacy metafield.

  1. Search for the metafield you want to migrate in your Syncio app.

  2. Click sync to create a clone of the metafield.

  3. You should now see two copies of the metafield on your Shopify destination store metafields page.

One will be the legacy metafield that is not currently syncing any values. The other will be the new metafield that will be syncing from now on.

🌟 Refer to Part 2: How to delete legacy metafields and how to identify, to learn how to identify the legacy field.

  4. The legacy field is now inert, and it is safe to transfer any Shopify functionality to the new one.

  5. Once you have updated your Shopify site to accept the new metafield namespace and key. Please reach out to our support so we can delete the legacy metafield if required.

Case 3: The source definition I want to sync is new

  1. Search for the metafield you want to sync in your Syncio app.

  2. Click sync to create a clone of the metafield.

  3. Once a green 'synced' status has been applied. Syncio will start auto-syncing values.

Refer to this section for more information about syncing values.

Part 2: How to delete legacy metafields

🌟 Due to Shopify limitations, the only way a legacy metafield can be deleted is by our developers.

If you find metafields on your Shopify where you encounter this error when deleting:

Our friendly developers will help you remove them after confirming the ones to keep and delete. Just send us a message in app or through: [email protected]

Q) How do I identify a legacy metafield?

A legacy metafield can be identified by the following:

  1. Shopify tags this metafield as managed by Syncio Multi Store Sync

  2. The name space and key will have this additional prefix:

    • app--1615469--

      • eg: app--1615469--custom.SizeGuide

    • Whereas normal (and new) metafields should have a namespace that looks like this: custom.SizeGuide

How to activate the metafields add-on

Metafield syncing is available for all destination stores. The first 3 product and 3 variant definitions sync is free.

If you need more, consider upgraded to the PRO version, which allows for up to 50 product and 50 variant definitions to be synced.

To activate the PRO metafields add-on. Click "Manage" to open your Syncio plan management page.

Scroll down to the add-ons section and select the the PRO version. Review your plan summary to the left and click "Next" to approve your selection.

How to sync a metafield definition

  1. Open your Syncio destination app and click on the "Metafields" link on the left navigation.

  2. A list of source stores will then displayed. Click the "View Metafields" button to view the available metafields for each store.

  3. Syncio will show a complete list of product metafields. Click the variant tab to switch

  4. You can also filter out any unsupported metafields.

  5. Once you've found the metafield(s) you want. Click the "Sync Definition" button to start the sync.

  6. When the status has been updated to a green "Synced", the definition will be available on your Shopify store.

Also depending if you are syncing a new or an existing metafield. Syncio will do the following:

  1. For new metafields. Syncio will make a copy on your store.

  2. For existing metafields. If Syncio can match the namespace and keys. Then Syncio will just connect and sync without making a copy.

How to sync metafield values

Syncio automatically syncs metafield values through regular product and order syncing actions.

If a metafield value is attached to a synced product or variant, Syncio will sync it once every 24 hours if an update is detected.

  1. First you'll need to sync the definition associated with the value you want to sync.

Any metafield defintion listed in your Syncio app with a green Synced status will allow any values from synced source store products and variants to sync.

  2. Once synced. Syncio will sync values for synced products and variants once every 24 hours whenever we detect a change with the synced product.

Here is a list of actions that will start the value sync:

    • Syncing a new product for the first time (product import).

    • When the source store updates the product.

    • When an order is created on either the destination or source store.

    • Clicking the "resync" button in your Syncio app for the product you need the values.

🌟 If you need to resync many metafield values, please reach out to our staff either in-app or via: [email protected] and ask for a:

β€’ Full store metafield resync.

We can help kick start your value sync for all products from a particular source store.
